Debate Advances to State Competition

The Haven High Debate Team has spent hours on research and practice, reflecting the countless elimination debate round placements, individual medals and team trophies. The accomplishments this debate season have been as frequent as the tournaments the team attends. The most recent of these accomplishments was the winning of the Regional Debate Tournament and being named Regional Debate Champions out of the ten teams at the tournament. The team comprised of Seniors Aricka Stout, Katie Marks, Josh Hevener and Junior Carolyn Roederer will be one of eight teams debating in late January for the 4 Speaker Debate State Title. Audrey Laughlin and Kyrsten Bonine, also on the debate team, have shared similar success by advancing to the 2 Speaker State Debate Championship to be held the same weekend. The team has become stronger, quicker and more determined as the season progressed on all levels. Freshman, JV, Varsity made this progress with only a single coach and countless faculty sponsorships from my colleagues at the high school. Because of this drive and dedication, the debate teams will do well at the State Debate Championships, when the teams have hit tough competition along the road they have responded with superior argumentation and debate skills. This drive has led them to both State Debate Championships.
